The Whitsundays are a group of islands in the Great Barrier Reef, just off the North Queensland coast near Cairns.
Our first big sailing adventure was our honeymoon there in 1998. We hired a 32' Bennetau which we shared with another couple, Helen and Chris. Over 10 days we circumnavigated several of the islands, claiming them for the Queen.
The sailing there was safe and easy with the only real danger being the odd bommie (subsurface coral outcrop) but these were clearly marked on the maps. Anchoring was a breeze in the sandy bays, however we didn't appreciate this at the time as it was our virgin voyage, so to speak.
Helen did an admiral job of captaining the voyage. For some reason I became anchor boy, and carry that burden to this day.

Endangering other people's lives always puts a smile on my face.
